Practical Guide line for cement storage

Cement should be stored off the ground in a well – aired , clean , dry and hard place .wrapping the cement bags in plastic sheets gives extra protection ; bulk cement will normally be stored in silos. Proper Storage preserves its quality and fitness for use. To prevent its deterioration it is necessary to protect it from rain, sun, winds and moisture. Moisture is the first and the greatest danger to be guarded against. Cement has great affinity for moisture and hence it should be stored well shielded from moisture laden current of air.

v  Do not store cement directly on the floor. Stok the cement on wood planks or at least polythene sheet . in other word , it’s should be store on the platform at the higher level on the site .
v  As far as possible , avoid the circulation of moist air in the cement godown and ensure that cement yard is dry .
v  No windows or ventilators should be allowed in godown , if unavoidable it should be kept closed all the time .
v  Leave the 12” gap between  the wall and cement beds .
v  Do not stake more than 12 bags in a height vertically
v  Cement lose the strength gradually during the period of the storage or age of the cement ,means use of the cement as early possible preferably within the 90 days of the its manufacturing date .
v  A newly constructed godown should not be used for storage of cement unless its interior is thoroughly dry.
v  Do not store in a building where walls, roof and floor are not completely weather proof.
  • storing information:

• Cement type
• Net weight of cement (approximately)
• Date of manufacture
• Manufacturer’s name or trade mark
• Certification mark of local authority

  • Temporary storage of cement:

It is the special case when cement is required to stored open at site for one day or two. In such situation cement bags should be staked on dry wooden platform resting on brick masonry, dry sand or may be aggregates concrete and raise 150 mm above ground surface.

This stack of cement must be covered with polythene sheet or tarpaulin completely to give protection against ambient moisture. There should have sufficient overlap of sheet on each other. But whatever the protection may be no temporary storage for cement in open condition is allowed in wet season.
